Environment News May 3 2022
A first-of-its-kind study revealed Wednesday that wildfires in U.S. and Canadian boreal forests could hinder efforts to meet global climate goals by using up a “sizable amount” of the world’s carbon budget through 2050.
Scientists say that “Wildfires in boreal forests can be especially harmful because of the amount of emissions they release into the atmosphere and because these forest store about two-thirds of the world’s forest carbon. That carbon is contained in the soil, peat and trees and has accumulated over hundreds or even thousands of years,”
“If not properly contained, heat-trapping emissions from wildfires in boreal forests could dramatically increase. This would really put at risk our global ability to limit warming in line with the Paris agreement,” That 2015 deal that aims to keep temperature rise this century below 2°C, and preferably no higher than 1.5°C.

More than 1 in 5 species of reptiles worldwide, are threatened with extinction, according to a comprehensive new assessment of thousands of species published Wednesday in the journal Nature.
Of 10,196 reptile species analyzed, 21 per cent percent were classified as endangered, critically endangered or vulnerable to extinction — including the king cobra in Southeast Asia.
Similar prior assessments had been conducted for mammals, birds and amphibians, informing government decisions about how to draw boundaries of national parks and allocate environmental funds.

Lloyd’s of London syndicate Aspen Insurance announced last month that is dropping the Trans Mountain pipeline when its insurance policy expires this summer. Aspen Insurance is the 17th company to cut insurance for the pipeline project.
It’s impossible to find out exactly which insurers are continuing to underwrite the company.
This time last year, the Canada Energy Regulator gave Trans Mountain permission to shield its list of insurers from the public after it argued activists pressuring underwriters to drop Trans Mountain could cause the company “material loss.”
Lloyd’s of London has been targeted by activists and Aspen is one of its syndicates — which means a group of companies or underwriters who join together to pool risk.
Staff lawyer with West Coast Environmental Law Eugene Kung says Aspen’s announcement demonstrates that those confidentiality concerns were not Trans Mountain’s only problem.

The U.S. government could be challenging a federal court ruling that restored protections for gray wolves in much of the United States.
Jamie Rappaport Clark, CEO and president at Defenders of Wildlife, says”Despite President Biden’s warnings about the looming threat of biodiversity loss, his administration is attempting to quash a significant ecological victory.”
The U.S. Department of Justice filed notice regarding the recent decision by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on federal protections for gray wolves,”
Activists say if the US government appeals the protection of the wolves it is a potential betrayal by President Joe Biden. The Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves were stripped away under his predecessor.

350.org in Canada has launched The Ministry of Just Transition. But they point out that The Ministry of Just Transition isn’t real, but it should be. They are asking folks to put pressure on the federal government and environment and climate change mininster Steven Guilbeault. We need our Members of Parliament to work together to legislate a Just Transition Act and make the Ministry of Just Transition a reality. You can take part at TransitionCanada.ca.

Today, Tuesday, May 3, is a National Day of Action to End Fossil Fuel Subsidies
Let’s build pressure on the subsidy phase-out and stop greenwashed loopholes. Actions include a cross-partisan town hall hosted by Climate Action Network Canada, and a rally in Ottawa. Organizers are asking us to help generate a Twitter storm to Ministers Guilbeault, Freeland and Wilkinson with the hash tag #StopFundingFossils. Details on the link I’ll post.
